What The F*** Are You Doing With Your Life?

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

Ok, so I don’t like using the F word but I needed your attention!

So, tell me what are you doing with your life?

Are you drifting through day by day, month by month, year by year, decade by decade?

How are you using your time?

I watched an episode of friends today (the one where Ross and Rachel were on a break) and realised it was 21 years old!!!!!!!

I almost fell off my seat

So if its 21 years since they took a break, what have you been doing since?

  • Raising a family?

  • Getting educated?

  • Working your way up the career ladder?

  • Travelling?

  • Building a business?

So are you happy?

Do you think you’ve “Made it”?

Or do you still have things that you want to do?

Do you want to make 2019 different?

What will your life look like in 2039? That’s right, that’s the same amount of time ago that Ross and Rachel took their "break"

Do you want to make the next 21 years different to your last 21?

Ok, so you’re on-board with me

You know that you need to make some changes

You know you need to give it some focus

I’m spending a day out today writing my 2019 goals. Some might say as a business owner this is too late! I should have been thinking about this over the summer but life happened and I pushed my goal planning session to the bottom of my to do list which is a huge mistake.

It is something that you should priortise

I always write my goals down as you’re 80% more likely to achieve them

Do you write yours down?

You’ve heard of a vision board right? This is LITERALLY just a picture of the things you want to achieve. It is a cool way to get down on paper the things you want out of life

Whether you do a vision board or use a tatty old bit of paper and just write a good old fashioned list, it doesn't matter

Remember 80% of your goals you can achieve by just WRITING THEM DOWN

When I ask my clients to write down their goals, some want to run a mile.

But, it doesn’t have to be HARD!

Sometimes it might be scary committing things to paper, telling people or even just knowing you now have some work to do

But what more do you want out of life? It takes work, focus and consistency to achieve most of the things that are worth having in life

I’ve written my goals down in my Filofax (I know soooo retro right!) . This lets me see them every day and be close enough to them that I remember what I'm aiming for EVERY SINGLE DAY

Some people write them on fancy bits of paper or card...

Some cut out of magazines and stick them up on their wall...

Some use technology to write theirs such as Pinterest or Canva....

I will check mine at least weekly and have a big review every month/quarter/year. I can then amend them if I need to or want to.

This year I achieved 80% of the things I set out too – what about the other 20% you might think? What about the 80% I DID achieve? What about all of the effort I put in knowing that I’d made myself accountable to ME to make my life better?

What about the clients I had depending on me?

What about my family depending on me?

What about my legacy?

What about if something happened to me?

What would I leave behind?

“We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will” Anonymous

So how do you create amazing goals that will accelerate your now MASSIVELY?

Here’s my 5 step process to setting your goals for 2019:

1. When setting goals remember your reason why.

Why is it that you do what you do? For your family? A better life for you? Helping others? Financial gains?

2. Review where you are

This may involve digging out some old goals and amending them or writing some totally new ones and remember to look at your whole life. I tend to clump my goals into categories such as finances, education, relationships, fun and business.

3. Remember your BHAG!

So you’ve heard of SMART but what about BHAG (Big hairy audacious goals!). Make some of them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Based). But make some of them SO BIG that you’ll frighten yourself senseless. Remember that we overestimate what we can do in a year but underestimate what we do in a decade.

4. Make them achievable

Set your goal and then the next step is to work backwards from that date. How are you going to make it happen? Work backwards in months/weeks/days and break the goal down into manageable chunks.

5. Review them often

Review your goals at least once a month to keep them at the forefront of your mind. Some people set a certain amount of goals, say 10 so they can absolutely bring them to mind when they want to.

I wanted to share some of my goals with you for 2019.

There is some element of vulnerability about this as some can be highly personal but you’re my friend or cheerleader right!

By reading this far I know you’ve got my back and I have yours so I trust you to share my inner most desires and thoughts.

I always split my goals into different headings and sometimes I do a mind map type design.

I always have a word for each year and my 2019 is going to be “Accelerate”. I’ve laid a lot of foundations in 2018 with relationships, work, building my business and starting my master’s degree

My goal headings are:

  • Financial

  • Fun

  • Business

  • Education

  • Relationships

So for 2019 one of my "Fun" goals is to have a holiday a month! That’s right!! 12 holidays in 2019. Travel and seeing new places is so important to me and invigorates me. It gives me a passion to serve others and my job allows me to work from anywhere. Therefore I can still work when I’m away (If I choose too)

One of my "Education" goals is to complete 2 of my Positive Psychology Master’s degree modules with distinction. This is at least 16 hours a week for me and a lot of effort (those of you who have done post grad) will get this. This will help me learn more tools and techniques to help my clients

One of my bigger "Client" goals is to work with 1 million clients during my career (Remember BHAG?!). In 2019 I want to directly work with 1000 clients.

Don’t wait for Jan 1st 2019 to write them or even get mid way through 2019...

DO IT NOW!

Spend some time reflecting on 2018 and realise that there is still time left in this year

You can achieve a lot in the remaining time

Here’s my goal setting template that I use and I get my clients to complete which you can use if you want to

Remember, not to wait another 21 years before you realise that time is flying by!
